Q: Dog Health Symptoms Adding Up?
My vet thinks I’m completely a paranoid pet parent when I talk about all these symptoms, so I wanted to run them by all you smarties here and see what you think.

1. Very dry nose, started when she started taking Thyroid pills. She was having some other weird symptoms, so I dropped it to half dose. Her nose has somewhat gotten wet again, but I’m still having to put on Vaseline. But it isn’t cracking and bleeding any longer.

2. Very runny nose. Very runny. Leaves huge puddles wherever she lays.

3. Recurring eye infections (vet says pink eye), lots of drainage, lots of itching and scratching her eyes.

4. Ringworm on her belly.

5. Biting and chewing her front paws constantly.

No behavior changes, and all this has started within the past few months. I have been changing her food, and finally settled on Innova Senior, she’s been on that for about six weeks. She’s 11, no real health issues, all her organs are fine, just on the one Thyroid pill, and that started the end of April of this year.

Do all these symptoms add up to something, or is it just a coincidence that it is all happening at the same time? Any ideas? Thanks!

A: Well the age of you pup will affect the length of time to recovery. A great web site with these symptoms is http://www.greatdanelady.com/articles/allergies.htm
If you read in detail alot of this is occasionally linked to the thyroid issue. I do not think you are paranoid, no one knows your pup like you do and you sound like you are doing a great job!! Good luck with everything.

Q: Are there symptoms of stomach cancer in dogs?
My Westie is 11 years old and is generally in good health. Lately he has been acting like he feels sick right after eating. He eats dry kibbles, the same kind he’s always eaten and they’ve never affected him before. I’m overly cautious about him so I always fear the worst and want to make sure he doesn’t have stomach cancer but I haven’t been able to find anything about if dogs exhibit symptoms. Anyone know?

A: I would think loss of appetite, sick to stomach, maybe bloody stool. My husband was diagnosed with stomach cancer earlier this year with no symptoms at all. Thankfully it was caught early.

Q: i need help with my dogs health?
My dog is an outdoor dog, the is a labrador retriever. We put skin so soft on her to keep the bugs off but it hasn’t worked very well with all the flooding and extra mosquitoes. She has many bug bites that have swelled up. What can i do to easy the pain of the mosquitoes bites and keep all the other diseases they carry from hurting her. I give her her heart worm pill every month. Is there anything i should be concerned about otherwise? If so what are the symptoms.

A: There is nothing to worry about if you already give her heartworm pills.
Use a different bug repellent. Skin so-soft isn’t that good at keeping bugs off.
The kind that is marketed towards hunters and fisherman is the best kind to get for your dog.
Where I’m from, its called “Deep Woods Off”, but any other similar type will be good.
The higher percentage of “DEET the better.

Q: Dog health question: Anyone had a pet with similar symptoms?
First: I’ve already taken him to the vet twice, and have now been referred to a specialist, who I’ll be seeing tomorrow.

He’s a 60+ pound beagle/blue tick coon hound mix, neutered with all of his shots.

His first episode was in late October. He began swallowing or gulping repeatedly and loudly, and had slight muscle tremors. I do not know if this happened after a lot of exercise, but we had recently gotten a new dog and they were playing in the backyard. On this day there were also a lot of wasps out (which he’s never learned not to bite at despite being stung before, no adverse effects), a few sticks they’d pulled out from beneath the deck, and since she’d had some fleas, he had recently been given a round of a permethrin-based spot on flea medication.

His voice changed over the winter and his whines/growls became very strained and high pitched, though he could still bark normally. In January he had another episode following some intense running around. More swallowing repeatedly, but no muscle tremors. He was pacing urgently and desperate to go outside and eat grass. When he was inside, he tried to eat a cloth comforter tag. He eventually threw up bile. He would also stand there drooling, something he never does, and he was hungry but didn’t want to eat his hard food until I’d moistened it.

His third episode was last Friday, again after some intensive activity. Started with swallowing again, then pacing and desperation to go outside. He was staring at his food, so I gave him some wet food, but he eventually threw up food and bile. He normally doesn’t snore but he did that night.

He also has clear nasal discharge and his gums are usually somewhat pale, though right now they look pink. When the vet checks his throat right under his ears, he starts coughing.

He’s had x-rays taken of his throat and chest, nothing abnormal. He’s going to get an endoscopy tomorrow.
Also: his appetite and thirst are fine. He eats and drinks well and has no problem with hard food when he is not having an episode. At least, if it hurts him, he shows no indication of it. He’s gained five pounds between January and March.
Oh yeah. When he’s not having an episode, which usually lasts for about a day, he seems perfectly fine and happy.
He’s three years old. He had muscle tremors the first time but not since and shows no signs of lethargy or anything. Even in the midst of an episode, he’s alert and energetic.

I have no idea what kind of x-ray they did beyond what areas were done.
He’s been on a different food for a month.

Little curious how it could possibly be an allergy when the only thing that sets it off is exhaustive activity of some kind, and in all three cases he had something very exciting going on.

First time was after new puppy, second after first time to the park in a while due to winter weather, third time was after company was over.

His heart and lungs were fine on x-ray, he has no exercise intolerance, and he’s as energetic and alert as ever.

Also, his voice has since changed back to normal, and the third episode was not as bad as the second, which was not as bad as the first.

Is it at all possible the permethrin is still stored in his body and when he’s super excited/energetic, it’s released and he has another reaction to it?

Permethrin toxicity includes his symptoms, but it seriously has been months since the one time I used it. I disposed of it away after his first episode so he hasn’t gotten into it since.

A: What are you feeding him? Poor quality dogfood weakens a dog’s system to the point anything can jump on them and make them sick. How long have you had him? How old is he? Do you know enough about his ancestry to be sure spot on flea preventative would not be harmful to him? If not, I would NOT put any more on him.

I’ve said it many times, but I’ll say it again: Poor nutrition combined with pesticides that are either ingested or applied to dog can make them very, very ill. It is hard on their organs, and it can be fatal. Holistic vets are trained in both traditional (crisis) veterinary medicine, as well as nutrition oriented treatments, and that’s why I recommend them.

Pet health care is becoming a multibillion dollar industry. That’s right, INDUSTRY. It’s a BUSINESS, because as much as we love our dogs, cats, horses and gerbils, the fact is, they are animals. And if the HMOs who let thousands of PEOPLE languish without proper treatment are not obliged to be ethical, why should a vet? I’ve seen big changes in the way animals are cared for in the nearly 50 years I’ve been dealing with veterinarians, and sad to say the changes are not good. Better techniques, medicines and treatments, and technology to determine exact nutritional needs do not replace the heart when it comes to caring for the body, whether it’s human or animal, but that’s what’s happened, and we need both.

Hope the website below can help you out, but if it were my dog, I’d take him to a holistic vet, change his diet the highest quality available, and get rid of the pesticides.

Edit: I came back to call “dizzyg” for giving me a TD (and you did). This person apparently has a problem with admitting that nutrition is not emphasized in vet training, that traditional medicine is geared toward “fixing” things, rather than preventing them, or there are a LOT of unethical vets around these days. I’ve run into a LOT of people who feel the same way, and I’ve run into plenty of vets (young ones) that are in it for the money.

BTW, *I* have myasthenia gravis, and I was diagnosed by a doctor I was assigned to go to for a workers comp case. When I went to my HMO md, he couldn’t tell if I had it or not. Hmm. I kept having symptoms, so I started doing research on how to help myself nutritionally. Turns out I needed something my ex FIL recommended to me years ago. What was it? Lecithin, manganese (not magnesium) and vitamin A. I started taking the amounts recommended (high but safe dose on the A) and guess what? My symptoms do not bother me unless I fail to take my MG vits. Laugh if you want, but if that’s what the dog has, this is what will help.

This is by NO means ALL of the ways I’ve seen benefits in myself, my family members and my animals from lowering or eliminating exposure to pesticides and improving nutrition. There isn’t space on here to do that. But, believe what you want, it’s still a free country (or, it’s supposed to be).

Edit: Nerve damage can be long lasting. It takes them a long time to regenerate. Here’s a link to the “drooling” symptom on the website I first posted. I thought it was rather interesting. Just because most dogs are not affected by the ingredients in the “safer” flea preventatives, does not mean your dog isn’t. http://www.web-dvm.net/organophosphatetoxicity.html

Q: Strange health symptoms!! help!!?
ive been getting strange hives all over my body and they are REALLY itchy…. i dont know what caused them. i do have two dogs, but ive never had this reaction before with them.

A: Your allergic to something your using or eating.

Q: Question on my dogs health?
Hi. About 8 months ago my 3 year old rottweiler had an operation to correct a slipped disc in his spine, he lost the use of his legs and bladder. Fortunately after hours of physio hes back on his feet. Although he does have bladder control back, he does do a very strange thing. I’ve looked everywhere and can’t seem to find anything that matches his symptoms.
His penis swells up and goes really hard and he has like little squirts of urine squirting out, he doesn’t move when this happens, he stands very still and looks really uncomfortable. This can go on for 10 minutes at a time.

I called our vet, and she said that it was because hes still getting the use of his bladder back, as he does still dribble when hes excited.
But I don’t whether shes right?
Its just really odd what he does?

Any ideas anyone?

A: Is he neutered? Have you had his prostate checked?

Q: does anyone know what a stroke or siezure may be like in small dogs? the symptoms? anything would help!!?
the dog that this deals with is a maltese and only 6months old..all shots and in good health generally. he was on he back shaking and yipping..pooped while doing that. they say after a seizure dogs should be able to walk and do normal stuf and respond but he is not moving the front legs only the back, hes drueling and was panting hard. hes calmed down and is sleeping i believe his eyes are closed and is breathing normal. anyone have anything similar or know of any advice thad be great. all the vet clinics are closed here and we dont know what went wrong. all we can do is wait the night out but if theres any advice we’ll take it
i guess I cant respond to my own question below to answer your guys remarks. but yea there are no emergency vets and no one t contact till the morning. hes laying down breathing normal at times than heavy at times. i know that breathing heavy is a sign of pain and all. he is still got a lil slimy drewl ocming out of his mouth and has not been able to walk with his front legs yet. I did try kyro syrup I haved used that before when we had to fly with him. but hes been eating healthy the whole day I just gave it to him just to make sure didnt seem to do much. Anyone know what else it might be? we dont hvae the money for head scans and such and and we just hope we will not have to put him down. any advice?

A: sounds like seizure type activity– cause can be varied.
in young, small breeds, you worry about thier blood sugar level. If they don’t eat often, it can drop and sometimes cause what you are describing. If you feel pup hasn’t eaten well, or hasn’t eaten in a while, you can rub a little Karo syrup on the gums to help increase the blood sugar.

Other wise, wait it out and call your vet first thing. Are there no emergency vets in the area? Does your vet have and after hours answering service or vet on call?

Good luck to you and your pup.

Q: Is there a home treatment of natural antibiotics for dogs for kennel cough?
I just got a puppy from the pound and he had kennel cough, I took him back and they said that there is no treatment for this. They did give him antibiotics for a possible secondary infection but kennel cough has to run its course much like a humas virus has to. They did say I can use Robitussin DM for the coughing symptoms. The puppy is fine but now my older dog has it, the vet said we have to let it run its course but she looks so miserable. I am giving her robitussin but I want to give her a boost of natural antibiotics that are safve for dogs. I did get some drops from the health food store but they do not have any antibiotic properties.

HELP! Thanks

A: With the rubitussin it should only last a few days. I do use lysol spray all around the house. They will sneeze when you first spray it.

Q: how long a dog has pneumonia before shows symptoms?
My friend adopted a 6 month old dog from pet finder, they told her shes good health and passed vet exam, also papers to prove it. after first night home got sick and $1000 later told her she has pneumonia. What to do, and did she get it from where she came from and how long before shows symptoms. Pet finder does ant have a no. to contact them. I am also n the middle of adopting my second dog from them but now I am scared. tank you.

A: Pneumonia is an accumulation of fluid on the lungs that can be caused by a number of things including: upper respiratory infection, asphyxiation of a substance (vomit, food, water), and various systematic diseases like cancer. Pneumonia is fairly evident when full-blown, but can develop fairly quickly, depending on the cause, or be low-grade with few symptoms.

I would contact the rescue from which she was adopted (pet finder is a listing service for rescue groups, not a rescue group itself) and report the problem. They will likely be willing to help out.

I would not be concerned about adopting a dog from a different rescue that lists on pet finder, if the rescue your friend worked with treats her poorly upon hearing this news, I would avoid that rescue group.

Q: What, if any, health issues do Bengal cats have as a breed?
Many purebred dogs and cats have particular problems that are common for that breed. Do Bengal cats have any common health issues? What are they, and what symptoms should I look out for?
The exotic breed of domestic cats, not the tigers, and not the football team.

A: I have a 4 yr old exotic cat and he is very healthy. The only reccommendation I can make is that they tend to become overweight b/c they are generally much larger than other breeds. My cat once weighed 32 lbs but now he is down to 22 lbs which the vet said is ok… just keep them active and watch how much food they eat.

Q: Can dogs contract the Swine Flu?
The WHO (World Health Organization) has increased the alert level to 5 which is the 2nd highest.

If dogs can contract the swine flu, what can I do to help prevent my dog from getting it? What symptoms should I look for if he does contract it?
I ask because I live in Southern California, about 1 hour North of the US/Mexico border. No cases have been reported in my county, but it’s still early yet.

A: No, your dog is safe.

The swine flu obviously came from pigs, as the name suggests, and it came from Mexico. In Mexico it morphed so humans could catch it, and then it spread into the United States which started this epidemic.

So it would have to morph again for your dog to be able to catch it.

Still keep on a look-out for your dog though, just in case but some freaky incident it does morph again!

Good luck!

Q: Does neem oil work for dogs with mange?
I have a 2 year old Maltese with a mild case of mange. I read several places that neem oil helps with the symptoms does anyone know if health food stores, drugstores, or petstores carry the product? And does this product work, for a small dog with mange, if not what does?

A: The thing is, mange is a generic term for many skin problems. You need to find out EXACTLY what it is. Treating it randomly can do more harm than good.

Neem oil is more for getting rid of parasites. I haven’t had any luck with it, but I know people who swear by it.

Q: What are the symptoms of hemangiosarcoma?
After reading several posts about a dog with hemangiosarcoma, I’m now actually starting to become worried about this. Can anybody tell me the symptoms of hemangiosarcoma? I have a small mixed breed that is getting older and his health is a bit priority of mine. I want to know the symptoms of this disease so I can prevent anything bad from happening to him…or at least catch it in time. If anyone knows…thanks!

A: Hemangiosarcomas can occur anywhere on or in the body, but primarily are present in the spleen, liver, heart, and skin.

Q: what kind of health issues could cause a dog to not hold weight?
My 3 year old German Shepherd female won’t hold weight. She has no other symptoms just won’t hold weight. Some foods will bulk her up for a short while but then she drops it all. I’m looking for suggestions of test or heath issues to look into more with my vet.

A: worms, intestinal bacteria, internal problems, disease of an organ, cancer, The vet can do a blood panel to help figure this out it is not very expensive usually about 120-160 …Good luck
You don’t say what foods you have tried but check out recall lists and keep the dog off things like soy..gluten. corn meal..he may have digestive troubles also..Try wellness, Innova something along those lines if you haven’t

Q: Need doggy health help….what could these symptoms be and what can I do?
I’ve had my dog, Tucker, since he was about 3 years old, he’s around 9 10 years old now, large mastiff-like mutt (I think he has mastiff and rhodesian ridge back, but I’m not 100). I recently noticed his panting seemed off and he puked yesterday. The bottom of his eyes have started becoming red as well. No one believes me because his puke somehow disappeared (I think he ate it but it was really light and yellowish, nothing substantial to it) and he’s been pacing a lot. I know my dog, he’s my best friend for years now, it’s not like him to act like this. I can’t tell if he’s eating or drinking (we free feed both of our dogs) but other than the pacing, his behavior is normal. I also found a strange looking dark lump on his right side and he doesn’t like it when I touch either of his sides.

It’s been really hard for me to tell what’s wrong with him. He has such a high tolerance to pain it’s been hard to tell if he’s in pain or not but I’m starting to notice it and I have no clue what it could be. Can someone tell me what this could be? Could it be twisted stomach? Someone mentioned it to me today and I looked it up and all it does is worry me. My parents won’t take him to the vet either. Is there anything I can do at all?
I’m 16, I’ve had him for about 7 years now. I can’t convince my parents to take him even though I know there’s something wrong.

He’s only vomited once. Yesterday in the morning. I don’t think its twisted, but it could still be serious.

A: panting/pacing are signs of pain and distress. If his third eye lids are up that also means there is something going on. He needs to be seen by a vet ASAP

if it is “bloat” there is nothing that can be done at home it is corrected with surgery.
