Q: Dogs & allergies?
Does anyone know if there is a type of shampoo for dogs that reduces dander or something? I love my doggie but she makes me sneeze so badly! Besides the shampoo, what else can I do to reduce my allergies to her? I would never get rid of her. So,im hoping somewhere out there has experience maybe using certain shampoos or other little tricks..
thanks everybody !!
opps, sorry, she is a chihuahua, 4 pounds, long hair
A: Feed her a high quality kibble and add some fish oil to her food every day (you can get it from a health food store, or even buy the tablets to give). This will help to keep her coat strong and healthy.
You can also feed her a raw egg once or twice per week, this also helps the coat from drying out.
How often do you groom her? Or is there someone else that can groom her for you, in the house? The more often she gets a good brushing, the more it will stimulate her natural oils in her skin and coat, also helping to keep it healthy. This will also reduce the amount of fur and dander that ends up throughout your home.
Don’t over-bathe her, this will make the shedding and dander worse, because it will dry out her skin. Once every 4-6 weeks should be plenty!
Treating her to a groomer every few months should also help!
Good luck
Add: Since she’s so tiny, if you do want to feed the raw egg, I’d suggest cracking one and splitting it into 3 servings over a week, saving it in the fridge. Serving one whole might upset her stomach.
Q: Are there any other dogs, besides poodles that are ok for people with dog allergies?
I plan to get a dog in a few years ,after I move out, & I was just wondering if poodles were the only dogs that were better for a dog owner to have? The doctor said for dogs it was 15,000 *allergies points or soemthing). & i was just curious if anyother dogs besides poodles were better for allergy sufferers? Thanks in advance. I am just a dog lover & love all kinds of dogs & animals & was just seeing my options. Thanks. & also i have had dogs and cats and other farm animals all my life, and i have never had a poodle, i currently own a bluehealer stock dog mix. I am just asking which breed of dog would be more healthy for me. Plus my allergies could just go away overtime because the cause of my allergies was being premature. Not that you care lol.But that makes me happy because thers a chance that my allergies could go away but just incase i want to be ahead of the game, i am also allergic to cats, but not as much.
A: It’s the HAIR of the dog that causes allergies.
Hairless Breeds or Dogs with little to no fur:
American Hairless Terrier- In build, the American Hairless Terrier is identical to the medium-sized Rat Terriers, from whom he is directly descended. The American Hairless is a well-muscled dog with a deep chest, strong shoulders, solid neck, and powerful legs.
American Hairless Terriers are intelligent, alert playful and loving dogs. Very inquisitive and lively. This affectionate dog makes an excellent companion for anyone. They are good with children, especially if they are raised with them from puppyhood.
Chinese Crested (hairless)-There are two distinct varieties of this unusual dog: one is hairless except for its feet, head and tail, and called, not surprisingly, the Hairless; the other is called the Powder Puff.
The most popular of the hairless breed, the Chinese Crested are still very rare. These dogs are sweet, lively, playful and cuddly. They are exceptionally loving and likes to hug and smile.
Hairless Khala- There is a Hairless Khala Medio (short legged, also called the pottery type) and a Hairless Khala Grande (long legged or sighthound type.) The Medio is a medium sized hound, powerful yet graceful. Loving and docile with family and friends.
Peruvian Inca Orchid (PIO)- For the right owner the Peruvian Inca Orchid is an exotic treat. Their skin requires special care (see grooming). Quick witted, calm and intelligent. They are usually good with children and get along with other dogs. The PIO are nighttime dogs, sometimes called Moonflowers, as do not like the light of the day nor the rays of the sun.
Xoloitzcuintle- resembles a robust Manchester Terrier. Xoloitzcuintle is pronounced (show-low-its-queen-tlee). There are three varieties: Standard, Miniature, and Toy.
Q: dogs allergies?

she did not get them till she got in IL she never had them in va beach or west va …. would it have to do with the water its well water ,,,, if i leave her in side for a week or give her a bath will that work , she is only 3 and just now started to get them ,.
A: Sounds like grass allergies. Or the grass could be making her allergies worse. My dog is allergic to just about everything.
Putting fish oil in her food will help her skin a bit. I would recommend taking her to the vet and getting her a steroid shot (vetalog) to stop her allergies and inflammation now and then you can start a prevention plan. I wouldn’t recommend relying just on steroid shots. they can shorten her life if you get them too frequently.
Q: Dog allergies, what kind of dogs tend to be good for people with allergies?
Hi there
I have allergies to cats and dogs
Especially cats, yikes!!
I seem to be fine with certain dogs like shizu dogs (spelling?)
Can anyone help me with other kinds of dogs?
Thanks
A: There are some dogs that some allergy suffers have better luck with. HOWEVER these are just general breeds, some people still can’t handle them or can hand;e other breeds. You will need to speak with an allergist and spend time with the dogs to see what kind of reactions you have.
Keeping that in mind, this is the AKCs list, but again do not assume that it will be a magic fix! http://www.akc.org/about/faq_allergies.cfm
DO NOT FALL FOR THE MIXES! A mix of two of these breeds ay still be low allergen, but you still may have a reaction AND NO GOOD BREEDER WILL BREED A MUTT so adopt if that is what you want. And any mix with a different kind of breed may take after the high allergen breed so that makes no sense to claim that they are “hypoallergenic”.
No matter what dog it is just spend time with it and have a backup plan though, any dog could cause a reaction!
ADD: And there is no difference between “hair” and “fur”. The dogs with coarser fur that is more like hair tend to be the lower shedding dogs, meaning less dander (the real allergen, since ost people are not allergic to hair), but again less can still mean you have a reaction.
Q: are whippets good dogs for people with allergies?
i have dog allergies and asthma.all my other dogs are outside dogs i want to ge a hypoallergenic dog that can live inside.
A: I agree. Poodles are a better choice…or one of the hairless breeds like a Chinese crested. While shorter hair is better, it won’t illiminate the problem completely. If you insist on having a short haired dog, frequent bathing would be a must to keep the dander and proteins from the saliva off the hair.
Q: What is a good homemade dog food recipe for dogs with allergies?
My dog has allergies. Tried other vet recommended things with no success. Now I want to make my dog’s food myself to see if that can help. I need a healthy recipe for dogs that is gluten and grain free. One that is good for dogs with allergies, and well balanced.
A: You could try feeding raw if the thought of raw animal carcasses don’t put you off. It is much cheaper than feeding commerical dog food and you know exactly what the dog is getting. Hopefully somebody will provide some links.
Q: How many dog owners relise some dogs have allergies to colors?
Hello,
I took my dogs to the vets today.I feed high quality/organic dog food.Anyhow one of my dogs was having minor allergies and the vet said it was because my dog was probably allergic to colors.I have to admite I once in awhile give them the treats that have colors instead of holistic treats. Is this true and has anyone else hear it?Thankyou.
The vet says breeds like English Bulldogs are especially sensitive to them.Like colors found in foods such as Beneful.Example:Blue 2,Red 40….
A: You probably mean food coloring? Allergic reaction to just the color…I doubt any dog has that as they can only detect a few colors.
Q: What is the best dog food for dogs with allergies?
I have 2 Shih Tzu’s & they are eating California Natural. I was thinking of switching them to Chicken Soup For The Dog Lovers Soul or Taste Of The Wild.
Which food is best for dogs with allergies?
It doesn’t have to be CSFTDLS or TOTW, any suggestions are appreciated.
A: My present dog has allergies as well.
We did a ton of research and found Solid Gold products to fit our needs nicely.
Changed his diet and all the problems went away.
Read the labels on the treats as well and adjust accordingly, as well as avoiding these same ingredients in their shampoos (if they’re allergic to corn, avoid corn oils as well, not only in food but also in shampoo since this can be absorbed through the skin.)
There are a lot of quality holistic foods out there…take a trip through a store that carries them and do a little research to find the one that fits your specific needs. Good luck.
You can check out www.solidgoldhealth.com to find the stores that carry them in your area.
Q: How to see if my mom has allergies to dogs?
My mom claims she has dog allergies and she was tested when she was a kid well i was hopping to prove her wrong because she might have outgrown the allergies or maybe never had them and just never wanted a dog.So how can i do this? i do not have a dog and i am very determined to get one. I asked her if she could get tested but she said they put a a hand full of needles all along your arm. Is that true?thanks in advance
A: Well for most people, childhood allergies tend to disappear when you turn into an adult.
I would suggest to her that she go get another allergy test.
Yes it is true about the needles down your arm. But if children can do it without crying – I’m sure a mature adult is able to do the same thing.
Q: Has anyone had to use steroids for you dogs allergies?
Recently my year and half old Labrador Retriever has been having a hard time with environmental allergies. I hate having him even on Benedryl but his reaction this time was so bad he got a staph infection. My vet tested him for everything and put him on steroids, but I hate the idea and side effects. Has anyone had experiences with the use of steroids on a dog ? Can anyone reccomend an alternative? Besides Benedryl ( does not work)
A: My dalmation has had severe allergies last year. She had staph…got on anti-biotics ..then staph again…she is 12yrs old.
I was ready to tear my hair out..amungst her hair loss…everywhere!
Alot of people made rude comments…she’s getting old..maybe you should consider….your vet bills are expensive
(they were approx. $100 every mo. + 1/2..this included steroid shots..that comprise a dogs health), your dog smells…your dog sheds too much..don’t bring her over.
I asked the vet to please try a stronger antibiotic. I put her on a flaxseed oil/ and olive oil regimine. Once a day at dinner time…I would pour a healthy tablespoon over her food and sprinkle garlic powder lightly across it. I zapped it in the microwave for 30 seconds…lightly added water..to make a little wetter..(less than a 1/2 tablespoons worth)-so it wasn’t too hot..and made a gravy w/garlic/oil and water ….My dog loves it! Her food is lamb…since…beef doesn’t digest well.
I do this daily at dinner. She has not had staph since. I also keep up on the flea/heartworm medication!
I got her a medicated shampoo…I had to bathe her often the first two weeks. W/in a few weeks her hair had almost completely grown back…and she was spunky again. She sheds less. Has a very beautiful coat..and no..she does not smell.
This is in no way to replace vet care…talk about it w/your animal’s provider. Good luck!
Q: What dog food brands are best for dogs with allergies?
I have a dog that has a lot of allergies and I’m having trouble finding a dog food for him. He’s allergic to wheat, corn, soy, dairy, chicken and beef! And of course, it can’t be super expensive? I’m trying one, but it’s $90 for a 40# bag. I’m a nurse so I work about 50hrs/wk so I don’t have time to cook meals for him.
A: I have researched this in depth since my poor dog died of kidney failure due to poor quality dog food!! (this is the only reason I answer these questions … to try and save a dogs life or at least to not let him/her suffer because of bad food)
Fromm Dog Food is Great for dogs and cats …http://www.frommfamily.com/ $42- $45 per 30 lb bag
NO fillers….some good quality grains….NO corn….gluten or by-products or wheatNO BHT, BHA OR ETHOXYQUIN
ALL human grade food….fruits…veggies and probiotics!! WHOLE fruits and veggies!!!! Just like the kind we get at our grocery stores!MEATS ARE DEBONED BY HAND!!!! NOT BY A MACHINE
check it out you wont regret it ! FROMM 4 STAR product line is the best!!!!!!! FROMM is a 100% holistic dog food. FROMM also has a grain-free option called surf & turf. They have Duck & Sweet Potato, Salmon A La Veg, Whitefish & Potato and Pork & Applesauce.
TOTWhttp://www.tasteofthewildpetfood.com/ … has a high protein content (not recommeded for non athletic dogs) Some TOTW choices have lesser amounts of protein.
Taste of the Wild contains Ethoxyquin which is a toxic fish preservative. (TOTW says that the cooking process kills all of it but it scared me away from their product)
around $42 for a 30 lb bag …. its the cheapest 6 star food ..
Remember : You get what you pay for. Keep in mind the top quality foods cost more but you feed less because there are no fillers or
unwanted ingredients. So in the long run you will be saving money with food and vet bills because your dog/cat will be healthier.
http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/ lots of great dog food choices on this site !!(keep in mind this site rates on high protein and grain free foods)
Here are the best of the best:Fromm, Blue Buffalo, Canidae, Halo, Holistic Blend, Newmans Own Oranics, Wellness,
(all the above mentioned foods have ” ALL LIFE STAGES” formulas)
http://www.best-dog-food-guide.com/
http://www.petfoodratings.net/dogs.html
http://www.dogfoodscoop.com/
Orijen and Welness are great but it is $60 – $80 for a 30 lb bag… high protein as well ..not good for non athletic dogs Orijen is WAY to high in protein for a non working/non-agility dog ..
Fromm Is what my puppy gets it has a lower protein % and great ingredients! 5 outta 6 stars due to lower protein (but most dogs should not have high protein levels …. It makes their kidneys work overtime for no reason)
You can get it online and if you go to the website you can find stores near you .. they wont be at walmarts and the like… they are in feed stores .. Agway..tractor supply stores etc
IF your dog is not going to be a hard working/agility dog all this high protein can do more harm than good in the long run,,, you wont notice it now but it can take its toll on a dogs kidneys as it ages.
http://4healthdogfood.tripod.com/ …
there is also a brand called 4health at the tractor supply store.. it is only $30 for a 35 lb bag.. and it seems to be of good quality. (not as good as the foods mentioned above but it good for the price if you are on a tight budget.)
It is very close in ingredients to the more expensive brandsCheck out the ingredients for yourself… no corn, wheat or soy.A Very good choice if you cant afford Fromm, Wellness, BB, TOTW, etc…etc.
also if you go to http://www.tractorsupply.com you can get a printable $5 off coupon!!
(they have Blue Buffalo, TOTW and 4Health)
GOOD LUCK TO YOU AND YOUR FURRY FRIENDS!!!
Q: What dogs are good for people with allergies to dander?
My mom has allergies to dog & cat dander, but we want to get a dog. What dogs would be okay to get?
A: Poodles, bichon frise, shih tzu, lhasa apsos and…that hairless dog—those are all “nonshed/non dander” dogs.
There might be one more, I’m not sure.
I have a shih tzu and he does NOT shed!
Q: How do I cure my dogs allergies??
My dog is a Westie (West highland white terrier). it is commen for his breed to get allergies that affect his skin. The vet gave us some medicine but it only works up to an point and then get worse. He has his allergies on his lip and it causes cuts and dryness on it. He is in healthy condition although i was wondering how to get the cuts and dryness away to make his lip much more cleaner for him.
A: Allergies can’t be cured they can only be managed and as you have said Westie’s are prone to skin problems which can be awful.
I would first find out what is causing the allergic reaction (your vet can test for this) as you need to know what is causing the problem in order to deal with it appropriately.
It may be diet related or environmental or malassezia (a yeast like over growth in your dogs skin). Whatever it is you need to know this first in order to treat it properly. It could be a change of diet, meds, antihistamines, shampoos or a combination.
Q: Are there any dogs that are not so bad for people with dog allergies?
My husband is allergic to dogs but I’m sure I heard that there are some breeds considered less allergenic than others. Is this true?
A: Even the supposed “hypoallergenic” dogs can cause a reaction for some people. It depends on the individual dog – i’ve heard cases of people being allergic to supposed “hypoallergenic” dogs and not other breeds (like german shepherd dogs), i’ve also heard of people being allergic to one dog over another of the same breed.
If you guys are thinking about getting a dog, then here are a few tips:
Get a purebred – as much as i love shelter dogs and as much as i promote adoption, when it comes to allergies you need to be 100% certain of a dog’s traits. You can’t chance that the dog may shed or have bad skin.
Look for a non-shedding dog that is not known for skin troubles. Shar Pei’s, for instance, are not good for allergy sufferers because they tend to suffer from dry skin (which produces dander.) German Shepherd aren’t either because they shed buckets.
Have him spend time with dogs (adult and puppy) from a reputable breeder. BYB (back yard breeders) have dog’s that don’t fit to standard, which means poor quality. That could mean more dander or poor health. A reputable breeder will have excellent stock and that means less chance of allergy reactions.

Q: Is there any way to calm my allergies to dogs?
I just bought a puppy(mini schnauzer)that I am allergic to.I don’t want to get rid of her because she is a good dog, plus I paid alot of money for her.I’ve never had allergies to dogs before, just cats.Is there something that I can do to calm my allergies(besides shaving her)because that doesn’t work.
A: YES-take a teaspoon of LOCAL honey each day to help your body develop immunities to all the air born irritants around you. These include pet dander, pollen, mold, smog and dust. Stay away from nose sprays and antihistamines as these tend to dry out your body resulting in sinus infections and long term kidney damage as well as other side effects. Local honey will cure your allergy to dogs but it will take a little while. You will also notice that you get less cold and flu symptoms and don’t catch every little germ that floats your way. Get healthy-naturally. Your body will thank you.
