Q: What are the symptoms of canine diabetes?
Also what are the symptoms of a canine bladder infection?
A: In a nutshell without labwork to back it up–
DIABETES:
-Drinking A LOT more water, possibly eating more
-Urinating A LOT more, both frequency and amount
-Maybe weight gain OR loss
BLADDER INFECTION:
-Normal to slightly increased drinking and eating
-Frequent urinating of small amounts, or frequent squatting/trying to pee without actually urinating
-Urinating/squatting in unusual places, especially if normally well housebroken
-Blood in the urine (possibly)
-Usually no change in weight
However, bloodwork and urinalysis are necessary to confirm the diagnosis. If diabetic, the blood glucose will be elevated and there may be glucose in the urine. In a bladder infection, there is usually bacteria in the urine that can be seen under a microscope. However, there may also be crystals in the urine which are also irritating and can cause some of the symptoms of the urinary infection. In fact, some kinds of crystals are more likely to form when there IS an infection– usually struvite (STROO-vite). This is why it’s important to see your vet if you think your pet has a bladder problem. If left untreated, struvite crystals from a chronic infection can develop into stones and require surgery to remove them. If your pet has diabetes, your vet can start insulin or other medication to lower the blood sugar. Sugar in the urine is also irritating and can cause your pet to urinate more often.

Q: What are the symptoms of canine mange?
what are the symptoms of canine mange?
A: lots and lots of itching. after the itching comes hair loss and red, flaky skin. http://www.bulldogrescue.co.uk/toby3.JPG here’s a picture of a pretty advanced case of mange. only a vet can diagnose and treat mange. it’s diagnosed by taking skin scrapings and testing them for the mites. so if you suspect your dog has it, you probably want to get him into the vet soon. the quicker you treat mange, the easier and less expensive it is to treat.
Q: Can dogs get colds? I’m thinking my dog is under the weather. What are canine symptoms of the common cold ?
She’s lethargic and makes weird snorting sounds. She does not have Kennel cough and she is not vomitting. She is an old dog.
A: Your dog has developed a cough, runny eyes and nose, and is even sneezing. Sure sounds like the common cold, doesn’t it? However, dogs don’t get colds in quite the same sense as humans do. When examined more closely, most doggy colds can actually be attributed to a variety of respiratory infections caused by canine-specific viruses and bacteria.
Some of these infections simply have to run their course until your dog is well again. Others can develop into serious illnesses if allowed to progress unchecked. Let’s take a look at some of the most common illnesses that often present themselves as dog colds.
Q: What r canine lupus symptoms, what is prognosis. Need to add to the Vets knowledge hopefully?
my Boston Terrier/Shiz-tsu is at vets he is unable to locate cause of flucuating fever, some drooling, lack of appetite.White blood cell count at the bottom of the scale. A: Systemic Lupus Erythematosus(SLE): is one of several diseases known as “the great imitators” because its symptoms vary so widely it often mimics or is mistaken for other illnesses, and because the symptoms come and go unpredictably. Diagnosis can be elusive, with patients sometimes suffering unexplained symptoms and untreated SLE for years. Common initial and chronic complaints are fever, malaise, joint pains, myalgias and fatigue.
Discoid Lupus symptoms: normally starts as loss of pigment around the nose. There may be scabby sores or just scaling of the nasal tissue. The surface of the nose may change from its typical cobblestoned appearance to a smooth surface.
Q: what are the symptoms of canine glaucoma?
We rescued a deaf Australian Cattle Dog. Her eyes don’t look quite normal. I’m wondering if she also has a congenital defect that might affect her eyes.
A: Definitely schedule a vet visit and have all possibilities checked out! Thank you for rescuing a dog that had medical problems as they are the least likely to find new forever homes! Bless you!
* An eye affected with glaucoma may be red, swollen, sore, or become clouded in appearance. There are two types of glaucoma seen in dogs: Primary glaucoma occurs when the drainage system is formed incorrectly and secondary glaucoma occurs when an animal has a normal drainage system, but that drain is blocked.
Your vet can perform routine assessment of your pet’s eye pressure with a fairly straightforward procedure. Since the most common time for inset of symptoms is between the ages of four and six, this is the time to establish an eye baseline.
If a pet is diagnosed to have glaucoma, immediate treatment is necessary to prevent the animal from going blind. Medication in the form of drops and/or pills may be used or in some cases, a surgical procedure is recommended*
Q: Canine skin allergy symptoms-how to help?
I have a dog with itching problem. I use canine advanitx on her and have also been giving her supplements for skin and coat.
I understand that benadryl(diphenhydramine) helps provide relief. Drs Foster/Smith sells benadryl in 50 mg caps. That is plenty for a person, it seems like a lot for an animal.
I am interested in hearing what other dog owners have had success with, in terms of treating canine skin allergy symptoms?
A: Switching to raw diet. I had my two-year old GSD allergy tested at six month intervals, went nuts trying to buy the best quality kibble with none of the forbidden ingredients, tried elimination diet, a few different medications, and holistic treatments. 18 months of all this for a baby two-year old dog. Well, switching to raw cleared it up within a week. I’ve heard this story repeated over and over from other people to the point where I no longer believe these skin problems are actually allergies but are in fact reactions to kibble, just as your face might break out in zits if you ate McDonalds for a week or two straight.
Good luck in your search for a solution. I know first-hand what a frustrating process it can be.
Q: What are the symptoms of canine cancer? Veterinarians please.?
My dog was diagnosed with cancer late and had to have surgery to take out the tumors. My family can’t really afford to pay for the cancer treatment he so badly needs. But I just want to soften the blow for myself when he does go. How long does he have to live? He is in constant pain because he doesn’t want to move from where he sleeps. Should i just have him put down then? Is it cheaper to do that?
A: Your own personal vet really should answer these questions. He has seen him and diagnosed him already. No one else can give you any better information over the internet.

A: Canine Flu:
Characteristic hacking cough, runny nose, fever, joint pain, loss of appetite, lethargic, diarreha.
Many dogs only get 1 or 2 of the symptoms while others have them all. All dogs will have the cough to some degree. The cough lasts up to 3 weeks sometimes longer.
Being a vet tech we have seen a lot of cases at the hospital recently, plus I have also dealt with it with all 6 of my own dogs in the past 2 weeks.

Q: Canine leukemia can quality of life be extended, any suggestions to help symptoms?
A: My spaniel had this. He had to got in to the vets for a full day every ten days or so for introvenus medication and he was on tablets every day. He was fine, you wouldn’t know there was anything wrong with him for almost a year and then one day he just stopped eating and was kept overnight at the vets. They did blood tests and said that he was no longer in remission. Later that day they rang to say he had destroyed his bedding etc and was very distressed so we decided to let him go. It broke my heart but i know we gave him every chance. Our insurance paid for his treatment and it ran in thousands. All I can say is it is very time consuming, very expensive but we got a year of great quality of life with Max and it was worth every penny. Just be prepared that they can give up very suddenly and you have to be strong enough to say goodnight.
Good luck i hope the dogs has some quality time to come.
On the plus side the specialist told us that dogs can stay in remission for years and years. We only got one year but it was a good, running around on the beach, lots of love year. Take good advice from a specialist in thie illness.
