Q: my dog having health problems 6 yr old maltese?
i know you guys arent vets but, if anyone have had this problem with their dog, please tell me what it is. i’m taking it to the vet tomorrow anyways.

so i have a 6 yr old maltese. she has all her shots. she’s playful, but about a week ago, she was spayed. she’s almost fully recovered seeing her playful again.

the problem is.. she’s been having these “attacks”. it’s like she’s honking up spit and chocking at the same time. i know she’s suffering because her eyes get huge like she’s having a asthma attack or heart attack. i feel so helpless around her when she gets these attacks and she’s also been sneezing a lot lot lately. oh yea, i don’t think the spaying is the problem, this happened also before but it’s occuring a lot more during these last couple of days.

the only thing that it could be is that i have been feeding it a little bit of cooked meats that humans eat like steak with no sauces etc.. and about 4 times, mcdonald’s sausage mcmuffin but i stopped and it was pinky sized.
another thing is that i’ve smoked marijuana around my dog but i never blew smoke at it. the house was fogged up and stuff but i don’t mean to harm my dog at all. i don’t do any of these things to my dog anymore but i’m really concerned for it’s safety at this point. if you have simliar experiences with dogs having this problem please give some advice after the vet visit. please.. thank you.
again.. i ALREADY know it’s bad and i’ve said i’ve stopped doing it. please open your eyes and reread or don’t say anything. you’re not even helping.

A: No, I don’t have similar experience because I wouldn’t be irresponsible enough to feed my dog sausage and smoke anything around it.

Please stop harming your dog – you know very well what you need to do to let your dog be well again.

Q: Which dog has less major health problems? Maltese, Yorkie, Bichon, Poodle ?
That’s not true “joanplus..” it’s a very broad generalization.

A: All dogs have health issues. However, based on their personalities, I think Bichon and Yorkie have the edge when it comes to health. Here are some details about them, http://dogtime.com/dog-breeds/bichon-frise/health and http://dogtime.com/dog-breeds/yorkshire-terrier/health

Q: Will maltese dogs under 4lbs at maturity have health problems?
Just saw this texas breeder who claims most of the maltese he breeds will be 3lbs to 4 lbs at maturity.
But i also heard that maltese not within the standard size 4lbs-7lbs will have health problems. So is there anybody who can give me some advice?

A: Yes…they will have numerous health issues beyond reasons. The dogs you are describing are dogs called “teacups”

They are inbreed runts, the breeder takes the small runts ( most of which are already prone to health issues are breed them to produce even “smaller dogs”.

A healthy Maltese should weight 4-6 pounds and these dogs are not healthy, a real breeder wouldn’t breed them to be this small. Dogs that are bred to be this small have numerous health issues because their skeletal structure is fragile, they often suffer from bone and muscle issues, as well as neurological and behavioral issues from being inbreed.

Its best to stay away from any dog that is called a “teacup” they don’t exist, this is just a cutsey name BYBers use to scam people into buying their BYBred mutant mutts.

Q: Do maltese dogs have A LOT of major health problems?

A: If you get a quality dog … which means the parents were health tested before they were bred, you should have a lot less problems than a byb one.

All in all a maltese is a healthy little booger.

Remember there is no such thing as teacup… or micro.

The tiny maltese or “teacup” as some bad breeders like to call them have a TON of things that can go wrong… teeth crowded, liver shunts, sugar problems, problems regulating their own body temp… and the list goes on.

If you are looking for one go to www.akc.org and check out local breeders in your area.

Q: Which dog breeds, in general, have fewer health problems than others?
FOR THOSE WHO ARE GOING TO SAY MIXED, ITS NOR PROVEN. A MALTIPOO IS NOT ANY HEALTHIER THAN A MALTESE OR A POODLE…

PLEASE GIVE SPECIFIC DOG BREED NAMES…THANKS!

A: Dogs who are bred for work (farm dogs, etc.) who have only been bred if they are doing a good job working tend to be quite healthy overall. These dogs are seldem bred for their looks, only for their ability to function, so they don’t often have defects bred into them. Border collies, aussies, heelers, and other dogs that generally have jobs, rather than being pets are among the best. That said, healthy dogs can be found in any breed, but you want to look for dogs whose parents have been healthy, and preferably had health tests done-eyes, hips, heart, etc. depending on the breed.

Q: What is a better dog: Maltese or Yorkshire Terrier?
The family is thinking about getting a new dog around Christmas time. Which dog is better suited for a family? I need pros and cons of each, like health problems.

Much appreciated :)
Thank you.

A: If you get your dog from a reputable breeder, than you shouldn’t have to worry too much about health problems.

There is no such thing as a ‘better’ dog. I personally like maltese’s more <3

The best thing you can do, is do as much research on each breed, and determine for yourselves which would do best in your family.

Best of Luck!

Q: I have 4 pure Maltese dogs and puppies. For health problem, I have to let them go.
Please advise how to sell them?

A: See if your registery has a breeders list and if you can put an ad on it.
Make sure you screen everyone before you place them.
If all else fails, THEN you contact the rescue organizations. I know your health is bad, but you bred them and it’s up to you to make sure they are safely placed. Don’t just drop them on the rescues who are already working at finding homes for others. If you’re able to do it yourself I would suggest that you do.
Sorry about your health and good luck finding great homes.

Q: DOG HEALTH PROBLEM…help please!?
OK so my dog is a Maltese. Shes going to be two in May. I’m having an issue with her scratching. she cries every time her eye itches and I feel so helpless. Her eyes stink and I clean her eye (tear her nose) with a q-tip almost 3 times a day in order to take off all that eye gunk. Some times a white thing come ovef half of her eye (just the left) which I’m guessing is her nictitating membrane. Im taking her to the vet but its weeks away what’s wrong with her and what can I do to help????

A: Your dog needs to be seen by a canine opthalmologist. Your regular vet can refer you to one. A few causes of her eye problems: red yeast infection, blocked tear ducts, ear infection, genetics and irritations and allergies. Weeks away for a vet appointment? Doesn’t sound right to me. No vet takes weeks to get into, even a specialist.

Q: Maltese dogs How much do you have to spend on them in 1 year.?
Im going to get a maltese dog and i need to know what to get for them in the first year {essential supplies} and how much it will cost. And the good brands and thing like healthy food. And also how much Maltese dogs cost because i don’t want to get the really cheap one with health problems but i don’t want to get a highly over priced one.
Thank you! :d
Thanks a lot its really helpful

A: you will have to take them to a groomer every 4 -8 weeks and that could be 45 + food could be 10-15 for a 4 lb bag and they will go through a bag a month approx …you have to get them spayed or neutered 150.00 -200.00 vaccinations 55.00 including office visit x 4 visits heart worm test 20.00 and the heartguard medicine itself is 40.00 for a years worth and frontline flea medicine could be 10-15 a month if you live in an area with fleas

Q: Is a Maltese dog right for me?
I live in a reasonably big house and have two big parks close by. I also have two cats so let me know if Maltese dogs tend to get along with cats.
This is my first dog so i don’t have much experience. I am willing to take it out for lots of walks.
I don’t want a dog that’s to loud or aggressive towards people that visit my house. I am willing to pay lots of attention to it.
How much do they cost. I don’t want to get a really cheap one with lots of health problems though.
If you could maby give me a few tips or Information about the breed.
If you don’t think this is the right breed for me then you are welcome to surgest a suitable breed.
Bye Thanks alot
Thanks this is really helpful advise

A: The majority of behavior problems you see in many Maltese is created by the owner, not a direct relation to the breed.

Many Maltese are yappy and co-dependant because they have been spoiled and over indulged by owners who do not know better.

I own two Maltese and here is my two cents. As with any other breed, socialization and training is key. As far as exersize requirements go, i would recommed a minimum of two 20 minute walks a day. As puppies treat them as you would a large dog, i.e. teach them it is not acceptable to jump on people, don’t carry them around like a purse, teach them basic commands like sit and stay.

Grooming requirements include brushing every 2-3 days and a trip to the groomer every 4-6 weeks.

Cost: I adopted mine from a shelter as puppies so cost was minimal. Try you local Maltese rescue organization. If you choose to purchase one from a breeder do ample research. A very well bred Maltese will run you anywhere from $700-$1200 depending on where you live. Inquire about health screenings and lineage.

Q: I want to buy a toy dog I want a maltipoo, a yorkshire terrirer, or a maltese. How much do these dogs cost…?
I dont want pure breeds their too expensive and they have too many health problems.

A: Firstly, you need to make up your mind about what kind of dog you want. Secondly, the breeds you have listed as your choices will cost you several hundred dollars to purchase. Thirdly, all of these breeds require frequent grooming which will cost you anywhere from $20-$50 every 6-8 weeks. Are you sure you want one of these breeds?

Q: is it normal for a maltese dog to constantly lick and bite at his paws?
he is one year old, and has no apparent skin problems, but chews and licks his paws (all four) sporadically throughout the day. i don’t know if this is a weird habit or how to break it? he’s been seen by a vet recently and has no health issues.

A: Could be an allergy.
Could be anxiety.
Could be just a bad habit.
Could be boredom.
Could be that he needs more exercise!
Could be sensitive to something in his food.
Hmmmm.

If you can easily distract him from chewing (for example, with a treat), it’s probably just a habit or behavior he’s developed. If not, he’s most likely either anxious about or allergic to something. Try watching him, to see when he tends to chew his paws … or, maybe, what is causing it.

If you can’t figure it out, please talk to your vet. Dogs can develop very painful and hard-to-heal spots on their paws if they are allowed to chew them. Since your dog is biting at all 4 paws, I would suspect that it is a systemic problem, or something related to boredom or anxiety. Good Luck.

Q: good dog for me?????????
I am considering getting a dog that is tall at least 22 inches or more high and that looks scary for example like a dogo argentino, doberman, or german shepherd. the dog has to be really intelligent and easy to train and most importantly has to get along with my small maltese dog. so who has any ideas which type of dog should i get oh and also i dont want a dog with serious health problems and has a minimum lifespan ofyears 11+ (my maltese dog gets along with other dogs)

A: No matter what large breed you choose from, it needs to be a puppy so it can “grow up” with your maltese dog. Large dogs have shorter life spans than smaller ones. You really should do some serious research about the breeds you are interested in so you can weigh the good & bad so far as health problems, personalities, etc.

Q: Should I get a shih tzu or a maltese?
I think they’re both so cute but I can’t decide!!! I can’t have a yorkie because they have 2 many health problems. Which dog has more health problems from my choice? And can a shih tzu get sick if your away from them for a while? And when you choose the dog tell me why.

A: i have a shih tzu myself. I would say a shih tzu for me because it really adapts and loves you and your home. Shih tzus are better for my fam because during the mornings we’re pretty busy and my shih tzu is able to take care of herself. Then we come back in about an hour and play with her. Maltese are bit more hyper and snap ankles. Shih tzus can get eye problem but it’s how much you take care of them. Even Maltese can get health problems. advice: take time, check the personalities of each dog and see which one matches your schedule. hey, you could buy two! Good Luck

Q: right dog for me??????
I want a guard dog that will get along with my small maltese dog that weighs 10 lbs and i also want a guard dog thats looks dangerous and is a healthy breed with little health problems and the dog has to have a life span longer than 11 years. i want the dog to be intelligent and respond quickly to command. minimum height has to be over 22 inches.

A: To tell you the truth, the best dog I ever had was a black lab. They are very loyal, and believe me, if he thinks you’re in danger, he will react. Labs also get along great with other animals as well as kids.
