Q: Pet Health Insurance Comparison?
Hey all,

What have your experiences been with VPI or Pet Best insurance? I’m trying to decide between them and of course they each say they’re the best. Pet Best says they pay a straight 80% after the deductible while VPI pays on a schedule. What have you expereinced?

A: Golly, I’ve never heard of that. Should I get some for the kitties?

Q: Pet health insurance comparison?
What’s better–VPI or ASPCA in terms of coverage, ease of processing coverage, etc.? Has anyone had good/bad experiences with either they can share? What are the key types of care I should make sure are covered based on your own experience? Thanks!

A: VPI** Just remember that anything that is considered a pre-existing condition won’t be reimbursed!!
Read ALL the fine print!

Q: Pet Insurance for Dog – Is there a comparison Site?
Tried compare the market and confused but cannot find any for pet insurance.

Looking for insurance for my 1 year old lab.

A: I know it is very confusing when shopping for pet insurance. There are too many information out there and cause a case of information overload.

No pet insurance are the same and you need to find one that tailors to your cat’s need. You have to be careful when choosing because some insurance company place a low cap on their reimbursement even though you are paying for higher premiums. Some will have low deductibles but will not cover much illness or low coverage for accidents and diagnosis. Many insurance companies will not cover pre existing conditions.

I cannot recommend one that stood out from the rest because what my cat needs might be different from what you need.

However, there is a site with a lot of good and useful reviews on the insurance available that you can look into.

Some guidelines:-

How old is your pet? The best time to purchase a pet health insurance policy is when your pet is young. Most pet health problems happen in the last two years of your pet’s life. So, the younger your pet is, the better

Is your breed prone to medical problems? While policy premiums are generally not based on breed, certain hereditary conditions are excluded.

For instance, Persian cats are prone to polycystic kidney disease (PKD). You can still buy pet insurance for your Persian; just don’t be surprised if it fails to cover related issues (some pet insurance policies may cover this, so check with your provider to make sure before you buy).

Is your pet already sick? Most pet insurance providers won’t cover pre-existing conditions. However, if you can prove your pet had a condition that has been cured, that may be covered.

Can you choose your own veterinarian? For many pet owners, vet choice is key, and for good reason. Some pet insurance companies require you to use veterinarians on their own network. Others don’t. As always, check with your provider regarding your choice of veterinarian.

What is your pet’s lifestyle? If your dog or cat spends most of his time outdoors, that will increase his/her risk of illness or injury.

What is covered? Many pet owners purchase pet health insurance policies to protect themselves from the high cost of future medical problems. Others want regular pet care such as annual physical exams and routine checkups and cleanings.

Just be advised that most standard pet insurance policies cover catastrophic accidents and illnesses. Routine vet visits tend to come as add-ons and/or riders.

What State do you Live In? If you are searching on the internet for pet health insurance, you need to check this. Just because a provider does business online doesn’t mean it services your state.

Check The Insurance Company’s Track Record

Every state in the U.S. has an insurance commissioner. If the insurance company you are considering has had legal/ethical issues that should cause you concern, the insurance commissioner’s office in your state or province should know about it. Check with them before you buy.

Q: My pet mongoose is confused by car insurance comparison websites. Simples, the problem is what should we do?

A: aww does he have a little dinner jacket and slippers and a pipe awww, can i have him…we can watch meerkat manor together and im sure it will sort him out bless ;)

Q: Pet insurance for puppies?
I need to get some pet insurance for my new cross-breed puppy. He’s 16weeks old, has had his jabs and is in good health. Can anyone recommend a provider? I’m going round in circles on search engines and comparison sites and need a good personal recommendation!

A: My dog is with Trupanion and I am very pleased with them. After a lot of research, I chose to go with them because they don’t have annual limits or claim limits like so many other companies do. This was a huge seller for me. They also let you choose your own deductible from $0 to $1000.
Check out the links below, one of the sites you can use to compare plans and you’ll see that Trupanion has a lot fewer exclusions as well. Good luck!

Q: What dog insurance company do you use?
I am deciding between VPI Pet Insurance and ASPCA Insurance. I need something that will cover check ups, emergencies and accidents. My dog is already neutered. If you have any other choices, please tell and tell WHY you use it so I can do a comparison.

A: I have Trupanion. They don’t have claim limits and they cover 90% (no benefits schedules) so no matter how big your bill is, they cover 90% of it.
Watch out for benefits schedules because sometimes they can get you– like if it says “surgery x costs $200″ and then your dog needs surgery x but your vet charges you $800, guess what: the insurance company will only cover 80-90% of the $200.

You can also choose a $0 deductible (or anywhere up to $1000) with Trupanion. I’m really happy with the company and they are really easy and straight forward to understand, definitely check them out!

Q: Why are Tax Credits not earned as a Pet Owner?
To be a pet owner is quite expensive. From the initial purchase of a pet until death do you part, the cost of owning a pet is costly. The fact that the government has funded agencies to help the animal population and maintain health and control as a public service makes me wonder why the taxpayer is not awarded for doing their part in being a responsible pet owner by allowing Tax credits for claiming their pet (s) as a dependent upon the household income?
Veterenarian bills are extremely expensive and there is even pet medical insurance offered to the public in case of unforseen emergencies that would otherwise render its owner helpless, financially, to their pet.
This would not happen if it were a human patient, yet, the comparison of medical proceedures between a human and that of an animal are astonishing!
Are they preying on our love of our pet? Why can the taxpayer not be given a percentage of these expenses as Tax refundable? To me, my pet is my family.
All pet owners should rally together!!

A: Pet ownership can not be verified on a tax return. Pets are not given any type of unique number like a SSN. Without this, everyone could claim they have 10 dogs and take deductions.

Pet ownership is viewed as a choice. When you decide to adopt a pet, you take on the bills and expenses voluntarily. The view is that while pets are nice, they don’t really contribute to society. A child deduction is allowed because the child will grow up into a taxpayer. A pet never will.

I hear you about the bills though. I spent thousands on my dog when she became injured this year. When we finally agreed that it was time to put her to sleep, I was more devastated than if I had lost a human family member. I see my family a few days a year, I spent every day with my dog.

Contributions to animal shelters are tax deductible!

Q: If there is no proof that mongrels are healthier than pure breeds, why is pet insurance cheaper for mongrels?
£76 – Cross Breed
£84 Labrador Retriever

I was going to give more example but the 3 i tried all came out of £84 for different pure breeds.

Source http://www.moneysupermarket.com/petinsurance/comparepet.asp?PetType=Dog

very quick comparison (no names and addresses etc. if you want to check).

Now if there are a group of people who are good at assessing risk it is insurance companies. So thoughts people? If you are looking for a dog that will cost you less at the vet. Is the choice not clear?
I find this whole subject fascinating. It’s really interesting to hear both sides of the argument.

But if you check out things like this

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&safe=off&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-US%3Aofficial&hs=FjG&q=health+of+purebreds+vs+mongrels&btnG=Search&meta=

most of the results state that mongrels live longer. With less health problems.
Do all the pure breed fans think these articles are lies? Miss-guided? Genetic diversity in dogs is somehow different to every other species?
It was an insurance comparison site, I’m getting pet insurance. There were 10ish results, all cheaper for mongrels.

A: there is proof..alot just don’t want to admit it..

Q: what pet insurance do you have?
I am looking to get insurance for my pom pup and im getting overwhelmed with all of the information out there. Im doing comparisons now but i wanted to ask other dog owners:

What insurance do you have
Is your insurance worth the price
What are the important things it should cover
If you dont have it, what kind would you get if you were going to get it

I am currently most interested in TRUPANION, it seems to cover the most for the best prices. Have you heard of it? what do you think of it?

Thank you for any information you might have for me.
do all insurances make you pay up front and then repay you later?

A: I also have Trupanion for my dog. I have been with them about 6 months, and have only filed one claim so far, it was repaid within 2 weeks so I was pleased.
I definitely recommend them as they seem to be the most fair in the industry– none of that benefits schedules, or limits per condition.
Plus I chose a $0 deductible, so they pay 90% of the claims with just the 10% copay.

All pet insurance companies in the US make you pay the vet first and then reimburse. Though I have heard that sometimes they might work with your vet under special circumstances (like really high bills). For the most part, vets don’t like dealing with the insurance companies though.

Q: Laser spaying for my female kitten…?
Hi. I’m leaning toward laser spaying. Would love to hear from those that have with their pets, any personal pros’s & con’s. Lola my indoor 7 month old is on the small side (a stray rescued from a drain pipe at 7 weeks) & has had her vaccinations, etc. & givin a clean bill of health. Because of her stature & because i’ve read up on this procedure being less invasive then going under the knife (i’m certain my regular vet that doesn’t do laser surgeries in his practice “yet”.. wouldn’t botch it) I’m more inclined to go this route. Have any of you had the traditional spay with other kitties to have the laser done also…your comparisons on that would be helpful ! I have pet insurance including a wellness plan that covers some laser procedures, need to check if laser neuter/spaying is one of them. The insurance has already saved me money & peace of mind so it’s not a problem if it would fall under certain elective coverage that I might not have. Also if theirs any New Jersey people responding i’m shopping for referrals of vet practices that you trust & used & been happy with for laser surgeries. I know it’s my call but I recently moved here & it can’t hurt to shop around with other caregivers information. I may go with the aspca in Manhattan…a long drive, but they have some of the best. Thanks in advance & give your kitty a big hug from me too!!! Happy Holidays

A: I had my two seven month old females laser spayed one month ago. I decided to go with the laser after doing a lot of research and getting advice from my vet. I can’t really say that any difference is visibly noticeable especially since cats are so good at hiding their pain. The vet still sends them home with pain medication and preventative antibiotics. They still don’t have much of an appetite for about 24 hours, and they sleep for most of the first 48 hours. I do think that it was the best way to go in trying to minimize their pain the same way I would for myself. It was slightly more expensive, which might be considered a con, but based on what I know about it, I’ll go with it in the future too.

My biggest problem was the stitches. They had three layers of internal, dissoluble stitches but the outside had regular stitches. One of mine would not leave them alone and ended up with a E Collar which was not pleasant for anyone involved. I don’t know if it’s an option, but next time, I am going to ask for all dissoluble stitches.

Good luck!

Q: Pet Insurance?
Pet Insurance Information.com The Web’s Best Third Party Pet Insurance Comparison Site<<<=== has anyone ever used this website to compare pet plans? Is it any good?

A: My cat has never been sick. Ever. She has had her regular shots and been spayed. The cost of pet insurance would be much more than what I’ve spent so far. My cat is 9 years old, so that would be a lot of premiums to pay.

Consider talking to your vet about it first. It wouldn’t do any good to sign up for pet insurance if your vet didn’t accept it. Sometimes a vet will be part of a network of care, so check it out that way first.

Q: Pet Insurance?
Pet Insurance Information.com The Web’s Best Third Party Pet Insurance Comparison Site<<<=== has anyone ever used this website to compare pet plans? Is it any good?

A: Most pet insurance companies get bad reviews.
Embrace and PetPlan US are the only ones that I see good review levels for. (above 90%)

If your animal is healthy, then take the montly premiums. and put them into a savings account. (even if you are thinking you will eventually get insurance, start this NOW)

Most companies won’t pay 100%, and will try to not pay all claims because of pre-existing, hereditary conditions, lost paperwork, etc….

If you decide to go with the insurance, be warned, read the contract carefully, and check reviews!
