Q: How much does pet (dog) insurance cost, and what is the best insurance company out there?
My dog is 3 years old.
A: I called a range of companies for my dog’s insurance. I finally choose to insure her via the ASPCA as they didn’t try to scare me into the most expensive policy and a portion of all payments goes to the ASPCA. I choose relatively light coverage as my dog is young and healthy but I can add other cover later as long as I do it before she needs it. I plan to cover her more fully when she is about 6 years old before she shows signs of any chronic conditions..
When I lived in the UK I used Petplan for my cats. The cover was good and one cat generally got injured enough every year to get me back way more than I paid in premiums.
Q: Pet/Dog Insurance??? Any suggestions, advice?
I’ve got three small dogs, two pekingnese and one chihuahua. They are all adults from the age of 5-7 years old. I have been taking one of my pekingense to the vet lately for various problems, such as bladder infection, she has arthritis in the hips and knees…I am now looking for a good pet insurance for all three pets. If anyone has any good suggestions of a certain company or if any are bad pet insurance companies to deal with please advise. Thank you!
A: I just wanted to let you know if you don’t already, that with all “pet insurance” companies I’ve found thus far you have to pay ALL vet costs, just as you normally would. After that you file a claim, it’s reviewed, and they decide whether or not they are going to reimburse you…and that can take up to six weeks. Google “Pet Insurance”……and then read the fine print and the FAQ’s.
Q: Do you have pet insurance for your dog?
I now have two dogs who recently had blood in their stool and I had to takem both to the emergency room. I ended up forking out $400 that day and I’m now thinking about getting some pet insurance.
What has been your experience with dog insurance? What are the best companies to go with?
A: I tried the method of putting money away….and it backfired big time when one dog tore her ACL and required surgery and another of my dogs had a complication with her spay surgery right around the same time. I forked out thousands. Since then, I’ve had insurance on my dogs and I have saved much more than I have paid in premiums. The trick is finding a good company though. Many companies have a pay schedule that they think is reasonable and that’s how they pay out…..so even though you may pay $500, if their payscale only allows $200 for that service, you only get the 200 bucks.
I highly recommend Petplan Insurance. They pay you based on what you actually pay your vet and have always paid me in a timely manner and 100% of what they promised to pay. They cover ER visits as well as specialists and everything from hip dysplasia to cancer treatments.

Q: What is the best/cheapest dog/pet insurance to get?
All those compare the market things confuse me and i don’t get them!!!
A: Pet health insurance will not only save your money but provide the peace of mind that you have done everything possible to safeguard your pets future health.
You can consult your veterinarian or do some research over this.
Q: i need help comparing and chosing the best pet/dog health insurance for my dogs…?
i need a little feedback on pet insurances…who is the best insurance provider when it comes to someone who has multiple dogs..VPI is the most popular but it isnt that convincing to me since they increase their cost as dogs age and i’ve heard too many negative comments about there coverage…. can someone help???
A: ok i used to have pet insurance on my lab… heres the deal pet insurance is a scam, if you factor in shots and your routine checkups on him, with time you end up paying far more for coverage than you would have just paying out of pocket, there was an article i read in the readers digest a few months back taling about insurance scams and pet insurance i believe was number 2 on the list, might wana look that up
Q: what’s a good, legitimate Pet (Dog) insurance program for California (Bay Area)?
There are so many out there that seem like either scams or just wastes of money. Is there any one out there that’s better than others?
A: Petco and I think Petsmart have them. I think they are legit.
Q: Pet (dog) insurance from EMBRACE for my 8 wks old Shih Tzu?
I just got my puppy yesterday. I have been doing research on Pet insurance. I have narrowed it down to Banfield and Embrace. Banfiled only have the wellness plan which I like but I like Embrace accidental plan. Can I buy both?
Does any have any personal experience good/ bad with these 2 companies or any advice about other company? Thank You for helping me taking care of my baby shih Tzu
A: What Cookie was saying about approved lists and what companies “think” a procedure should cost: this is called a benefits schedule. I agree that you should not go with a pet insurance company that uses benefits schedules.
That said, not all pet insurance companies go by these lists. I have my dog insured with Trupanion and they pay 90% of the ACTUAL bill, and don’t go by a list of benefits schedules.
Secondly, I partially agree with them about the Banfield wellness plan. I have heard complaints, and I believe you are only allowed to use it at the Banfield vets. With any other pet insurance company, you can choose any vet. And on the topic of wellness plans– it actually makes more sense financially to budget for check-ups and vaccinations out of your own pocket. Pet insurance companies charge you more to provide wellness coverage so you end up losing money if you pay for it through a company.
With the right company and an understanding of exactly what they cover, pet insurance is great. I have only had it about 3 months and have already had to use it.
I would definitely recommend Trupanion as they are very fair and straight forward. They cover 90% of the actual bill, no claim limits or annual limits, just a lifetime limit. They don’t raise your premiums as your pet ages either, which most companies do.
I researched Embrace a little, and they raise premiums with pet age. They also have annual limits for how much you can claim, and obviously its more expensive to get a higher limit. You also have to pay extra to get them to cover a higher % of the bill. And it looks like they have “usual, customary, and reasonable” veterinary costs which is a fancy way of saying benefits schedule.
Well good luck with your puppy! Glad you’re considering pet insurance regardless of which company you choose because puppies seem to be the most prone to accidents
Q: Dog/Pet Insurance policy need help deciding?
Can anybody recommend me a good dog/pet insurance company? I am looking for an insurance that covers 100% or close to 100% for regular visits. Coverage for Cosmetic Surgery would be a big plus
A: Routine coverage is not worth it as you typically put more money in than you get back. Plus the ones I have seen only cover up to $200 per year (but you’re paying $180 to get that $200 worth of coverage). It makes more financial sense to just pay those expenses yourself.
Secondly, no insurance company is going to pay for cosmetic surgeries. Pet insurance is to help you pay for unexpected vet bills for accidents and illnesses. Broken leg, cancer, ear infection, etc. Just like your health insurance is not going to pay for a face lift, pet insurance is not going to pay for tail docking.
If you’re concerned about paying for your dog’s health bills, then pet insurance is a good idea.
Q: What is the best pet insurance for a dog who is over 8 year’s old in the UK ?
My dogs are just over 8 year old and im looking for some cover,
I ideally want a policy that will pay out for the life of my dogs, if they become ill.
I know a lot of insurance companys like Pet Plan for example wont touch a dog over 8 years of age, The Marks and Spenser pet insurance looks pretty good, any feed back much appreciated
A: If you go onto compare-pet-insurance.com where you can check companies against each other. i found a massive difference in prices and found Argos the cheapest . Hopes this help.
Q: Legally, do I have to have pet insurance for my dog?
We live in the UK, do I have to legally have pet insurance for my dog? Whether I should or not is not what I am asking, is there any law governing it?
hepp t thanks is that why its in the pets /dogs section why do we allow the stupid here??
A: Pet Insurance isn’t currently a legal requirement but I fill forms out for pet claims in my job (vet nurse) and would strongly recommend insurance. i filled out over 1,500 of claims this week and that doesn’t include referral work for them patients. Also you will be liable to pay compensation if your dog damages anyones property, get hit by a car whilst off the lead or bites another dog so what its worth get it covered, Make sure its covered for life not just for 12months. Ps I expect theres a clause in your house insurance that wont cover you third party
Q: who knew Churchill do Africa Wild Dog pet insurance?
http://www.churchill.com/home/pet-cover-options.htm
under breeds in the dog one is the option to chose Africa Wild Dog, i mean come on, they are a threatened species and you would need liences to have one which would be near impossible for just keeping one as a pet.
How stupid?
A: The reason Churchill’s offers insurance for african wild dogs is because they are covered under insurance for exotics which are expensive to buy and keep and so the insurance pays out because if anything that expensive is kept, the owner is more likely to make monthly payments.
This is not however a con to encourage people to try and buy them, because they would never be allowed to without a dangerous wild animals licence which they have to be qualified to obtain in the first place.
However for those who are qualified and capable of providing the correct housing, care and space, the breeding program for wild dogs in the UK is actually growing and the need to insure is greater in case of the death of one or more dogs. This insures a new animal can be bought and introduced from a different collection to continue the breeding program for the future.
Without the availability of insurance for exotics, the zoos and private collectors would not be able to keep the animals in the first place, hence the reason Churchill’s provides insurance cover.
If you went into detail, you will actually find that Churchill’s doesn’t just provide for African wild dogs. Its also provides cover for Canadian Timber wolves, Dingos and Coyotes. It also provides insurance cover for African elephants.

Q: Dog walking business? do i need ‘pet sitting’ insurance for dog walking over the summer with a friend?
If I only take out dogs which are insured via owners pet insurance is that ok or do I have to be insured???
All i wanna do is make a bit extra money by dog walking in my neighbourhood, surely i should be ok considering i am not a business
A: Talk to your agent about your homeowners/renters insurance. Depending on the coverage in place, you may have some coverage there already.
Q: Dog Pet Insurance (2 pups)…?
So, is dog insurance worth it? I beleive insurance is a big scam. However, for dog insurance it seems cheap and that they’d pay out. So, does anyone have pet insurance and is it cheap do they pay in emergencies or in the elder years?
Any advice and experience welcome.
(I have a yorkie-poo and maltese-poo.)
A: I have VPI pet insurance and it is great. My dog is only 4 so I don’t know about the elder years, but so far they have paid for everything we have sent it. They paid most of his neutering, and he has been to the ER twice and they have paid for most of that as well. Our annual payment to the insurance company is around 530. Our deductible at the vet or ER is 50 and everything over that amount the insurance company takes care of for the most part. How it works is you pay the full amount, have the vet tech fill out a paper explaining the procedures completed, you fax in the form, and you get reimbursed in about 2 weeks. It’s pretty painless and has definitely paid for itself. They also offer a cancer package which will take care of most of the costs. It really is a great way to go. And definitely not a scam.
